DASH stands for dietary approaches to stop hypertension.
What makes this diet different from many other popular diets these days is that its purpose is not to primarily help people lose weight but rather to lower their blood pressure.
There have been a number of studies, which find that it helps for several outcomes. These include decreased blood pressure, decreased weight, decreased LDL cholesterol, decreased triglycerides, and better insulin sensitivity. One study that looked at.people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, even found that it resulted in improved liver function tests.
According to the NIH website: The Dash eating plan is promoted as a “flexible and balanced eating plan..” It recommends that people eat a diet mostly composed of vegetables, fruits, and whole gr. They can include low-fat dairy products, fish, poultry, pains, nuts and vegetable oils. Foods that are high in saturated fat, full fat dairy products, and tropical oils should be limited. Lastly, sugar sweetened beverages and sweets should also be limited.
The NIH website provides a table of various guidelines based on an individual’s age, sex, and physical activity level.
If you are looking for a new diet plan for 2017, you may want to consider this one. I especially recommend you take a look at it if you have problems with any number the following hypertension, elevated LDL cholesterol, elevated triglycerides, elevated blood sugar, or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
