Basal Cell Carcinoma Shave Biopsy | Auburn Medical Group

A shave biopsy is obtained to rule out basal cell carcinoma as the diagnosis of this skin lesion. The pathology results were positive, meaning that this lesion is INDEED a basal cell carcinoma. The margins were not clear of tumor, so the patient will have additional evaluation by a Dermatologist where several options for definitive treatment will probably be offered. This type of skin cancer is normally very treatable and rarely results in significant effects on people’s health.

Dr. Gawayne Removes a Foreign Body from a Patient’s Hand | Auburn Medical Group

Dr. Gawyne removes a wooden splinter by incision and drainage into an abscess caused by the presence of the wood foreign body under the skin. We do not explore for foreign objects in the skin unless it is visible from the outside or a wound opening, or if there is an effect on the body like an abscess. The splinter of wood can be seen in the thumbnail and in the video as it comes out of the wound and is wiped away by Dr. Gawayne.

Punch Biopsy Burning Man Discussion | Auburn Medical Group

This skin lesion was biopsied using a punch biopsy instrument to obtain a sample for evaluation by a Pathologist to rule out cancer.
We were specifically concerned for possible malignant melanoma, although other skin cancers can also have pigmentation. The diagnosis was seborrheic keratosis, a benign skin lesion.

Skin lesions demonstrating ABCDE features should be considered for biopsy to rule out cancer. In this case we are most concerned about the possibility of malignant melanoma.

The ABCDE features:

Asymmetry

Border Irregularity

Color Variation

Diameter Greater than 6 mm

Evolving Shape, Size, or Color

We discussed Burning Man because much of the traffic to and from Burning Man passes through Auburn and Colfax on Interstate 80. The insert demonstrates the white dust seen covering vehicles returning from Burning Man.

Myringotomy & Ear Tube Feat. Dr. Tim Fife | Auburn Medical Group

Myringotomy is the creation of an incision in the ear drum to allow drainage of fluid buildup in the middle ear. It is often done to correct hearing loss or to drain infected pus. A tympanostomy tube is placed to keep the myringotomy open for a few months to guarantee that drainage continues until the eustachian tube starts draining the middle ear again.

Dr. Tim A. Fife, Ear|Nose|Throat with Sacramento ENT (http://www.sacent.com) performs the procedure.

Part 1: Dr. Fife explains the cause of the hearing loss and performs the myringotomy.

Part 2: Dr. Fife attempts placement of the tympanostomy tube and Shelley has a vasovagal reaction.

Part 3: Dr. Fife extends the incision of the original myringotomy and successfully places the tympanostomy tube after Shelley has another vasovagal reaction.

Cheek Shave Biopsy | Auburn Medical Group

A shave biopsy of the cheek is a relatively convenient way to get a sample of skin lesion for analysis by pathology to determine the presence of absence of skin cancer in suspicious skin lesion. The shave does not pass through all of the layers of skin, but it is often adequate to completely remove less aggressive forms of skin cancer like basal cell carcinoma.
