Curettage and Cautery for Basal Cell Carcinoma | Auburn Medical Group

Basal celll carcinoma curettage and cautery is a minimally invasive treatment for a form of skin cancer. Our technique is uniquely using chemical cautery with silver nitrate (AgNO3) instead of electrocautery. The standard procedure is to use a curette to remove the cancer cells while leaving the normal skin intact. This is followed by cautery to stop any bleeding in the are where the cancer was removed. The procedure is then repeated twice for a total of three times. It has a high success rate, but even if the basal cell carcinoma recurs it does not spread. It can be treated again with the same or different treatment. Other treatments include topical cream chemotherapy, cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen, or extensional removal of the cancer and surrounding margins of normal skin.

Neurofibroma Shave Biopsy | Auburn Medical Group

A neurofibroma is removed with a shave biopsy because of its recent change in behavior. It had been becoming irritated with a car seat belt. Biopsy is performed to rule out changes due to cancerous growth. The pathology found that this dermal neurofibroma was inflamed, likely due to the irritation caused by the seat belt.

Neurofibromas are benign tumors which grow from nearby nerve sheaths.

Chuck’s Tough Ear Wax Removal | Auburn Medical Group

Ear wax removal for Chuck’s left ear proved to require more irrigation than we could finish at the first visit. Although the right ear cleared fine with some curettage, the left will require another visit so we can charge up the Waterpik overnight. Be sure to catch the next video to see how the abrasions heal and to see the left ear finally get cleared.

Doctors Consult Each Other on a Squamous Cell Carcinoma | Auburn Medical Group

Dr. Mark Vaughan consults with Dr. Gawayne Vaughan regarding options for treatment of a possible squamous cell carcinoma on a patient’s hand. They agree that a shave biopsy would be the best course of action for the patient. This way a possible skin cancer would be identified and a check would be made for complete removal. Treating the lesion with liquid nitrogen cryotherapy would likely destroy the lesion, but there would be a small risk of incompletely destroying cancer cells which could continue to grow locally or even spread.

The pathology results found squamous cell carcinoma. The margins were clear. No further treatment is needed for this cancer which was cured by this removal. Annual full body skin surveys are recommended to catch future lesions early.

Find Dr. Gawayne’s blog at http://www.drgreenknight.com
